Auditor slams universities over unused funds

Sweden’s national audit office has called for more government control over how universities use public money, after it found that their savings increased by 126 per cent between 2007 and 2016.

Universities and university colleges have accumulated 12 billion Swedish kronor (€1.2bn) in public capital over the past decade, according to the auditor’s report, published on 28 November. The surplus is “larger than ever”, the auditor said, adding that “this is an inefficient way to use resources”.

The auditor’s report aimed to find out how the 31 public universities and university colleges have managed their finances between 2007 and 2016. It also examined the regulatory framework governing the use of public funds at universities.
