Microplastics researchers found guilty of misconduct

Two Uppsala University scientists who published a paper on the effects of eating plastic particles on fish have been found guilty of research misconduct, after an investigation by the university authorities.

Oona Lönnstedt and Peter Eklöv have “violated the regulations on ethical approval for animal experimentation”, Uppsala University said in a statement on 6 December.

Their article was criticised on accuracy and ethical grounds following its publication in June 2016. The journal Science withdrew the article on 3 May, saying in a statement that “the weight of the evidence is that the paper should now be retracted”.
