Universities should invest in researcher-led systems of student mobility, instead of relying solely on traditional exchange programmes like Erasmus, according to the League of European Research Universities.
In a policy paper published on 29 April, Leru highlights the importance of so-called ‘structured’ mobility programmes, led by research staff, to increase the academic quality of student exchange and ensure a higher number of students have the opportunity to study internationally.
In the paper, Leru recommends two specific types of structured programmes: networked mobility, in which staff develop an alliance of institutions to allow students to spend a certain amount of time in different universities, or ‘embedded’ mobility, in which a common course curriculum is developed by staff at several institutions.
