Swiss foundation pledges improvements

The Swiss National Science Foundation has agreed to implement recommendations to improve its transparency, following a study of the agency earlier this year.

In a statement on 8 May, the SNSF says it will take steps to improve communication with researchers, including clearer explanation of evaluation criteria and processes. The organisation will also examine the selection procedure for membership of the National Research Council, and conduct regular, systematic reviews of funding schemes, says the statement.

The statement is published in response to a study of the SNSF, released on 21 February. This analysis, commissioned by the SNSF and conducted by researchers at the Evaluation Center of Western Michigan University in the US, was generally positive about the agency’s workings but pointed out several areas for improvement.
