Thijn Brummelkamp, a genetics researcher at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, has been announced as the winner of the 2013 Gold Medal from the European life sciences organisation Embo.
The EMBO award is given annually to a scientist under the age of 40 who has made an outstanding contribution to the life sciences.
Brummelkamp has been presented with the medal in recognition of his work to develop a novel method to inactivate genes. His method is now widely used in research to understand the genetic basis of human diseases such as cancer.
