Swiss students protest against Erasmus suspension

About 400 students have gathered in Geneva to express their anger over the suspension of Switzerland’s participation in the Erasmus+ university exchange programme, Le Courrier reports.

The protest took place on 5 March, following a referendum on 9 February which decided in favour of imposing immigration quotas for EU citizens looking to work or study in Switzerland. As a result of this outcome, Swiss negotiations with the EU on the country’s participation in the Erasmus+ initiative and in Horizon 2020 have stalled.

The country will now be unable to participate as a full member in either initiative throughout 2014.
