Council advocates more female decision-makers in academia

National ministers have highlighted the need to increase the representation of women on decision-making bodies in science and research as part of recommendations on gender equality.

The Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council called on the member states and the Commission to: “adopt, maintain and enhance targeted measures to increase the representation of women in decision-making” in areas such as academia, science, research institutions, the media and sports, in conclusions adopted on 7 December.

The Council’s conclusions were based on a European Institute for Gender Equality report which identified a growing concern at EU level about the underrepresentation of women in scientific careers.
