Dutch universities confirm deal with Elsevier

The Dutch Association of Universities has reached an agreement with the academic publisher Elsevier on subscriptions to, and open-access publishing in, its journals.

The agreement will give researchers based in Dutch universities access to Elsevier journals and enable them to publish open access in some of the journals, the VSNU said on 10 December. The three-year agreement commences in 2016, and the VSNU said its aim is that 30 per cent of papers published in Elsevier journals by researchers based in The Netherlands will be published open access by 2018.

Gerard Meijer, chief negotiator on behalf of the VSNU and chairman of Radboud University Nijmegen, said in a statement that the agreement was “great news” and a “big deal” for open access.
