A survey of biomedical researchers has found that one-third of junior researchers do not check that the antibodies they use to identify proteins have the properties they intend.
The survey of over 500 biomedical researchers found that 31 per cent of those with less than 5 years of experience, 14 per cent of those with 6-10 years of experience and 10 per cent of those with more than 10 years of experience do not carry out any validation at all of the antibodies they use.
When asked about barriers to carrying out validation, 27 per cent of researchers with less than 5 years of experience said that they “do not see the necessity”. About 70 per cent of all researchers said that time was a barrier, while about half said that cost was a problem.
