Academic freedom fighters open European branch

Scholars at Risk, an international network of higher education institutions that advocates for academic freedom, has opened a European office in Ireland.

The SAR Europe office, which was launched on 28 November, “represents the culmination of nearly two decades of partnership” between European institutions and the wider network, SAR said in a press release.

“With this initiative, together with our European partners and over 300 members in Europe, we send a resounding message of solidarity to scholars facing threats to their lives and their liberty because of who they are and what they do,” said SAR’s European director Sinead O’Gorman. “At a time when SAR is receiving more requests for assistance from scholars than ever, SAR Europe’s strong and unified voice will help to make a difference.”
