Consortium to form European university project

A consortium of 12 research-intensive universities has announced that it will form a “European university” that will attempt to win funding from a new EU initiative to strengthen higher education and research.

The European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) announced on 8 January that it will launch the joint project in 2019. It said that the EU initiative to establish about 20 such joint projects by 2024 “perfectly corresponds to the long-term strategy of the ECIU”.

The ECIU’s general-secretary Katrin Dircksen, who has a strategy and policy support role at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, told her university’s newspaper that the project would be “a joint university involving all ECIU partners”. She said it would be “an umbrella organisation [that] will be a co-creation with industry, public organisations, society, academics and students”, with particular focuses on societal needs and lifelong learning.
