The European Commission has awarded €85 million to 17 groups of higher education institutions to pilot novel forms of deep collaboration under the EU’s European Universities initiative.

The 17 alliances or networks—referred to as European Universities—were selected from 54 applications. They involve 114 institutions from 24 member states, the Commission announced on 26 June.

Tibor Navracsics, the education commissioner, said he was “very proud” to announce the winners, and that they would help to raise the quality of higher education in Europe and to make it more attractive, inclusive and competitive.
