University group remains concerned despite Commission’s reassurances
The European Commission has pushed back against a warning that universities in the EU will not be able to use the bloc’s regional funds to support research in the 2021-27 EU budget period, describing it as “incorrect”.
The dispute relates to the European Regional Development Fund, which allocated about €41 billion to research and innovation in 2014-20. On 30 October, the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities warned that the Commission’s department for regional policy intends to cut off direct support for university research through the ERDF—a move it said would widen divisions in the bloc.
