ESOF 2020 meeting pushed back over Covid-19 pandemic

EuroScience postpones biennial Open Forum, while academies group Allea cancels June meeting

Covid-19 has forced the researcher association EuroScience to postpone its biennial Open Forum, billed as “the largest interdisciplinary forum on science and innovation in Europe”.

The conference was due to take place on 5-9 July in Trieste, Italy—the European country hardest hit by the pandemic so far. It has now been postponed until September, with teleconferencing options to be made available.

“In these challenging times, scientific research is more crucial than ever and its impact, as well as its communication to governments and the public, are of utmost importance,” ESOF2020 Champion Stefano Fantoni said on 20 March.

“It is for this reason that EuroScience and the Fondazione Internazionale Trieste has taken the decision not to cancel the event but rather to go forward with the EuroScience Open Forum, aware of the urgency of shared strategies to address the current challenges we are facing.”

Meanwhile, the Allea federation of European academies of sciences and humanities has cancelled “all physical meetings” of its 2020 general assembly, slated to take place on 3-4 June in London. Allea said aspects of the assembly would be “reorganised to take place by correspondence”.
