Draft European Research Area plan seeks ‘pact for research’

‘Deepened’ ERA would see states pool more policymaking and resources, going beyond voluntary coordination

EU countries could be asked to sign up to a “pact for research and innovation”, according to a draft European Commission plan to reform the bloc’s European Research Area initiative for knowledge and researcher circulation.

The pact, included in a mid-June draft of a Commission communication on the ERA expected in July-September, and seen by Research Professional News, would see countries recommit to the values and principles developed over the ERA’s 20-year lifespan, with the Commission due to add some as-yet unnamed principles.
