EUA warns Commission not to pile more policies on universities

European University Association cautions against ‘duplication’ in forthcoming European strategy

A group representing more than 800 universities in 48 European countries has called for the EU to avoid adding burdensome policies to the sector as it prepares an overarching strategy for universities on the continent.

The European Commission hopes the strategy will support cross-border collaboration and efforts to align higher education systems, possibly via work to increase innovation activities. It also wants to boost gender equality and bring in ‘European degrees’ to sit alongside national qualifications. For months now it has been consulting universities about their priorities, ahead of the release of the strategy which is expected around January.
