Academic freedom ‘in global decline’, warns research leader

Stéphanie Balme, dean at Sciences Po College, flags “authoritarian regimes that are now scientific superpowers”

European research leaders have sounded the alarm over what they say is the clear erosion of academic freedom globally.

“Academic freedom or academic liberties are clearly in decline around the world,” Stéphanie Balme, dean of the College of Sciences at Sciences Po College in Paris, warned on 12 May.
