Europe’s universities issue warning over government meddling in their activities

                       

Pleas for more freedom follow concern over declining institutional autonomy in multiple countries

Universities across the EU have urged authorities to give them more freedom, after a major study of university autonomy across Europe found “excessive and unnecessary” political interference in their affairs.

The European University Association (EUA) published the fourth edition of its autonomy scorecard this month, using metrics for organisational, financial, staffing and academic autonomy to rank freedom levels in 35 higher education systems.
