European university groups support institutional leaders in protesting government plans for their boards

European university groups have voiced their support for Swedish rectors who are taking a stand against their government’s plans for university boards, which they say infringe on academic freedom.

Thirty-seven rectors of Swedish universities signed a letter last month criticising a decision by the government to reduce the term of office for external board members at the country’s higher education institutions.
