Women underrepresented among EU scientists and engineers

Women hold 41 per cent of key jobs, but dominate wider science and technology workforce

Women make up the majority of the EU’s science and technology workforce but are often in service roles and remain “underrepresented” as scientists and engineers, according to the latest statistics from the bloc.

Only 41 per cent of the EU’s scientists and engineers were women in 2022, the statistics agency Eurostat reported on 2 June. This was despite women making up 52 per cent of the 76 million people employed in all jobs associated with science and technology in the EU, and 51 per cent of the population.
