Will Horizon 2020 in action live up to the vision?

The European Commission’s proposals for the seven-year, €80-billion Horizon 2020 research funding programme hold promises, surprises and concerns.

Most promising is a much clearer focus than the two framework programmes it replaces: Framework 7 for research and technology; and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme. Its priorities—scientific excellence, industrial leadership and societal challenges—will each support a limited number of focal areas.
