How to be truly international

Geoffrey Williams

Internationalism is a buzz word, but how and why European universities play the international game is rarely discussed.

International relations in universities have largely developed opportunistically with separate networks operating in research and in teaching with no overall policy or system of governance. To be really effective, we have to go beyond shopping lists of broad objectives and look at what we are doing and why, so as to develop an overall policy and put into place a system of governance and management to achieve these aims.
