Inside Out

Back page gossip from the 7 December issue of Research Europe

Lucky dip In the previous issue we reported that a coin toss decided the European Medicine Agency’s new post-Brexit home, after Amsterdam and Milan tied in the final round of voting on 20 November. But Estonia’s deputy minister for EU affairs Matti Maasikas clarified at that evening’s press conference that a random draw from “a big transparent bowl with two small lots” broke the deadlock. The EU certainly knows how to organise a Christmas raffle.

Stunted growth On 30 November the European Commission posted an article on its website “celebrating” the tenth anniversary of Fusion for Energy, the body through which the EU contributes to the Iter nuclear fusion reactor project. That’s right, the same Iter that was originally supposed to reach its ‘first plasma’ milestone in 2016, but which is now only set to reach that goal at the end of 2025. Will Iter will be up and running by the time Fusion for Energy celebrates its golden anniversary in 40 years’ time?
