Alas, poor Spitzenkandidaten. Political groups selected their lead candidates for the Commission presidency, who then spent months drawing up policies, campaigning and debating ahead of the May elections—inspiring the highest turnout in decades—only for national leaders in the Council to undo all that effort with a shake of their heads.
