The pandemic will shape 2020—but so will a host of other stories

As the summer holiday season gets underway, the EU is emerging slowly from the pandemic. Covid-19’s impact, however, is yet to be determined, and many campuses and laboratories continue to operate remotely, if at all.

Away from the coronavirus, there have been other upheavals across the continent that will impact and inform higher education and research policy in the second half of 2020. Ireland, for example, had an election in February, which resulted in the formation of a dedicated higher education, innovation and research department. Led by former health minister Simon Harris, it is the Irish government’s first department ever to be dedicated solely to science and education.
