Researchers share NZ$133m

New Zealand scientists will share NZ$133 million in research grants from the ministry of business, innovation and employment.

The cash will support 47 projects that focus on the biological industries, energy and minerals, the environment, hazards and infrastructure, and health and society, the government said on 24 August.

Just over NZ$7m of these funds have been allocated for 11 projects through a Smart Ideas scheme introduced in this funding round.

The initiative supports research that can deliver commercial results. The government hopes the approach will boost an entrepreneurial culture among New Zealand researchers.

Funding for research in the high-value manufacturing and services sector will be announced in the next few weeks.
