New Zealand government awards NZ$800m to challenges

Seven out of 10 national challenges identified by New Zealand's government have been allocated NZ$804 million (US$657m) for the next decade.

Science minister Steven Joyce announced the funding on 19 December 2013. The first three challenges had been allocated funding earlier in the year.

The challenges, revealed in May 2013, include Ageing Well, Sustainable Seas and Healthier Lives. "[Each involves] cross-disciplinary work with researchers from different organisations,” said Joyce. “This collaborative approach is the real strength of the challenge concept—bringing together the best Kiwi scientists to do the best research for New Zealand.”
