Calculator crunches numbers to see if solar stacks up

A website tool to help New Zealand home owners decide if solar panels will be a cost-effective investment has been designed by electrical engineers at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.

The Centre of Excellence in Electrical Power Engineering at UC has developed an online calculator that can produce a detailed analysis to determine whether solar electricity systems will be a viable option.

Launching the service on 1 November, EPECentre director Alan Miller said the calculator was designed to give a “detailed and useful” result that is specifically tailored to an individual home. It is not suitable for commercial buildings or off-grid developments.
