The New Zealand government plans to invest $80 million in biosecurity research over the next decade, as part of a national strategy to reduce the economic burden of invasive plants and animals.
Launching the strategy on 22 November, NZ primary industries minister Nathan Guy said that “innovative science” was needed to cut the costs involved in eradicating pests and diseases.
Destructive pests in NZ include European and Asian wasp species, fruit fly and feral goats as well as introduced plants such as broom and boneseed.
