New Zealand’s new prime minister, Bill English, has pledged to lead “a moderate government” and flagged that education and social equality will be among his top priorities.
The former finance minister and NZ deputy prime minister was elected unopposed as the country’s new leader on 12 December, after health minister Jonathan Coleman and police minister Judith Collins withdrew their bids to contest the leadership.
Climate change minister Paula Bennett (above, centre) was also elected unopposed as deputy prime minister. She is the first female Nationals deputy leader and also the first Māori woman to take on the role.
