Key steps down as PM: ‘I gave it everything I had’

New Zealand's prime minister John Key has resigned, saying that he believes it is “the right time” to step down and make room for new talent to lead the country.

“This the hardest decision I’ve ever made and I don’t know what I’ll do next,” he said.

“It has been an enormous privilege to be prime minister of New Zealand and these last eight years have been an incredible experience. Throughout those years I have given everything I could to this job.”
