University recognises policy work of Māori lawyer

One of New Zealand’s top law academics and social justice advocates, Moana Jackson, will receive an honorary doctorate from Victoria University of Wellington in December.

Jackson is the co-founder and director of the Māori Legal Service and has been an outspoken critic of NZ’s criminal justice system over several decades.

He specialises in NZ constitutional law and the legal standing of the Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 by Māori leaders and the British government.
