Changes needed to limit role of political advisers

Two leading New Zealand academics have challenged the Ardern government to clarify whether it will curb the influence of media and political advisers in shaping policy.

Victoria University of Wellington reader in government Chris Eichbaum and Massey University politics professor Richard Shaw say the first step must be “acceptance that there is a problem”.

In an online editorial for NZ Newsroom, they argue that public servants are increasingly unable to offer “free and frank advice” to ministers because of the influence of political staff.
