Goldsmith wants overhaul of Marsden Fund grants

New Zealand’s science minister Paul Goldsmith has called for a shake-up of the country’s main research fund, saying it needs to reflect changes to national science policy.

His comments follow the publication of a government report which suggested that the Marsden Fund’s low success rate for grant applications could “discourage talented researchers from applying”.

It also questioned whether the Marsden Fund is being manipulated to “drive up funding” for specific areas, and whether university research administrators understand the government’s policy on Māori engagement.
