NZ earthquake contributed to more heart attacks, study finds

People living in homes that were badly damaged by the Canterbury region earthquake in New Zealand developed higher rates of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks, according to University of Otago research.

The study found that during the first three months after the earthquake occurred in September 2010, almost 1,300 people in Christchurch were admitted to hospital “with a primary diagnosis of cardiovascular disease”.

Data also revealed that 12 months after the earthquake, more than 4,500 people in Christchurch were admitted to hospitals with heart problems.
