Free speech debate ‘can’t ignore ethics’, says policy expert

Human progress requires untruthful, unscientific and degrading arguments to be restricted, editorial says

Universities are not obliged to tolerate racism under the banner of free speech and have a right to restrict views that attack social inclusion and equality, an Auckland University of Technology academic has said.

David Hall, a senior researcher with the university’s think tank the Policy Observatory, suggests that “free speech absolutism” cannot ignore ethics and social accountability.
