Hospitals discharging terminally ill to aged care homes in trend known as ‘admission to die’
Pressure on New Zealand’s hospitals to free up beds for emergency admissions has led to ‘end of life’ patients being moved to aged care homes that lack appropriate medical facilities, a University of Otago study has found.
It calls for urgent changes to the NZ health system to provide better palliative care, including Ministry of Health funding for terminally ill patients needing specialist medical treatment and counselling.
