Government initiative aims to improve environmental outcomes for rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands

Peter Skelton, a former environmental law lecturer at Lincoln University, has been appointed as New Zealand’s inaugural chief freshwater commissioner as part of major reforms to the country’s regional planning laws.

Skelton will be responsible for organising and leading independent panels that will hear public submissions on planning decisions that affect NZ rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands. The panels will include environmental experts, council representatives and members of Māori communities.
