Waikato to investigate academics’ claims of structural racism

University council appoints two senior figures to carry out independent review

Claims of systemic racism at the University of Waikato are to be investigated by former soldier and public servant Harawira Gardiner and former education minister Hekia Parata.

The review will begin on 7 September, with the pair given access to staff and students. It follows claims made by six academics, in a 13-page letter sent to the Ministry of Education on 29 August, that there was “structural and casual racism” at Waikato. The Tertiary Education Union responded by calling for an investigation.
