Update to NZ research evaluation process nears completion

           

Research codes nixed and descriptions updated ahead of 2026 assessment exercise

New Zealand’s Tertiary Education Commission is finalising its guidelines for evaluating the quality of university research.

Changes to the Performance-Based Research Fund guidelines, for a quality evaluation process due in 2026, were released on 8 November. The assessment of research under the PBRF affects the amount of research funding flowing to universities, with total funding currently worth around NZ$315 million a year.
