Lancaster and Liverpool may get together

Lancaster University and the University of Liverpool are consulting on a proposal to unite under a federal system. The two have published a Green Paper saying that a “close relationship” between the two “would push LLU into the leading group of universities both for [quality-related] funding and for research-council funding”. Lancaster’s vice-chancellor, Paul Wellings, has suggested this would be collaboration under a single system, akin to the University of California, rather than a merger.
