STFC lab wins core funding but loses jobs

The Science and Technology Facilities Council could be on the verge of cutting particle physics jobs at the Rutherford Appleton laboratory in Didcot, Oxfordshire, following a review into its work.

The STFC review, which was ordered in June and published on 28 September, recommends the laboratory’s particle physics department be provided with core funding instead of having to depend on winning competitive grants to survive. It also said the department of 72 people should be reduced to 50 staff funded by the STFC. Of these remaining positions, 10 will not be permanent.
