University applications for 2012 drop 9 per cent

The number of people applying to university in 2012 has dropped nine per cent from last year’s figures, reveals data by the university admissions service, UCAS.

The figures show early trends in applications to British universities for September next year, when tuition fees are set to increase. Only 69,724 applicants have applied this year, compared with 76,612 the same time last year.
