Fusion project left in limbo by EU disputes

The Joint European Torus, a UK-based nuclear fusion project, is being held hostage by budget wrangles in Europe.

Jet, based at the Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire, is part of Euratom, the budget line that supports fusion activities in Europe. Euratom is the only part of the EU budget that has not yet been signed off for 2012. Jet’s funding from 1 January 2012 will not be confirmed until a dispute between European funders about meeting cost overruns of billions of euros at Iter is resolved.
