UK science infrastructure gets £200m boost

George Osborne, the UK chancellor, announced £200 million (€233m) in new funding for science capital projects as part of his autumn statement, published on 29 November.

Investments will include £80m for the next phase of development at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Institute of Animal Health laboratory at Pirbright, Surrey, UK. The funding should allow the institute to complete the remaining half of planned “Phase 3” upgrades, providing avian flu research facilities.
