Government to offer £20,000 sweetener for science teachers

The government plans to fill the shortage of science and maths teachers by offering £20,000 bursaries to attract students with first class degrees into the profession, according to the Daily Telegraph.

In an overhaul of the system of teacher training in England, ministers will also announce the introduction of new personality tests—combined with tougher English and maths exams—to weed out the weakest applicants, the newspaper reported on 27 June.
