Statistics agency candidate pulls out after Commons grilling

Janet Finch, the government’s preferred candidate to head the UK Statistics Authority, has pulled out of the running following a meeting with the House of Commons Public Administration Select Committee. In a statement on 5 July, Finch, who is co-chairwoman of the Prime Minister’s science advisory council, the Council for Science and Technology, said that it was clear that committee members disagreed with her view on “how the independence of the chair should be exercised”.
