Taskforce sets sights on economic impact

Policy organisations the Council for Industry and Higher Education and the UK-Innovation Research Centre have launched a taskforce to investigate how university research can deliver “maximum economic impact for the UK globally”.

The taskforce, jointly led by David Eyton, head of research and technology at BP, and Shirley Pearce, vice-chancellor of Loughborough University, will send a list of recommendations to the government by July 2012. It will look at how universities and businesses can be encouraged to work together, how public and industry-funded research can be better aligned and how to “maximise the strategic use of departmental public sector R&D”.
