US company gets go-ahead for UK stem cell trial

A US biotech company has received permission to carry out the first clinical trial using human embryonic stem cells outside the US, at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, reported the Financial Times on 22 September.

The Massachusetts-based biotech company, Advanced Cell Technology, received permission from the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency to carry out research on a retinal disease that the newspaper said “could ultimately cure blindness”.
