‘We should have avoided the word “consultation”’

David Delpy, chief executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council says he regrets having used the term “consultation” when referring to discussions with a number of organisations on possible cuts to the council’s research portfolio.

The portfolio has faced vocal opposition from the research community since its publication in July. Both the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry have denied the EPSRC’s claims that they were consulted on the plans, saying they were merely briefed.
